UK Deposit Return Scheme: What Drinks Producers Need to Know

Woman recycling plastic bottle for Deposit Return Scheme system

The UK Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for drinks containers is coming in October 2027 and if your business places drinks in PET bottles or metal cans on the UK market, you will be affected.
Here’s what drinks producers need to know.

What is the UK Deposit Return Scheme

The Deposit Return Scheme is a government-led initiative designed to increase the collection and recycling of drinks containers.

Under DRS:

  • Consumers will pay a deposit when purchasing an in-scope drinks container.
  • That deposit will be refunded when the empty container is returned.
  • Returns are expected to be made via reverse vending machines or designated return points.

The aim is simple: improve material capture and reduce litter by creating a clear financial incentive for return.

Which containers are in scope?

The scheme applies to:

  • PET plastic drinks bottles
  • Aluminium and steel drinks cans

Size range: 150ml to 3 litres. Multi-packs are included, with deposits applied per container. The Welsh scheme will also include glass bottles[1]

[1] Whilst glass drinks containers will be part of the scheme and collected from the outset, there will be a transition period during which glass drinks containers will be exempt from labelling and carry a zero‑pence deposit. This will last for four years, providing a substantial period which gives industry time to adapt to the requirements which will then apply to glass drinks containers in parallel with the phasing in of reuse.

Is the scheme mandatory?

Yes. If your organisation places in-scope drinks containers on the UK market, participation in DRS will be mandatory.

There will also be specific requirements depending on whether you are a producer, importer or brand owner. Businesses should review their responsibilities well ahead of the October 2027 go-live date.

From 1 October 2027, all in-scope containers must display the official Exchange for Change DRS logo. Key points include:

  • A single scheme logo must appear on each in-scope item.
  • The primary (portrait) logo is the default option.
  • A secondary (landscape) version may only be used where space constraints prevent use of the primary logo
  • The logo must follow strict size and clear space rules (see pages 9–10 of the guidance)
  • The icon must be printed in a single colour, preferably black or white

The logo is an identifier, it shows that the container is part of the Deposit Return Scheme.

What about recycling labels?

he DRS logo is an identifier it does not provide recycling instructions.

Exchange for Change has confirmed that producers may:

  • Continue using OPRL alongside the Exchange for Change logo, or
  • Use the Exchange for Change logo in place of recycling guidance

However, as DRS fundamentally relies on a change in consumer behaviour (return vs. kerbside recycling), we strongly recommend members consider the communication implications carefully.

The two labels can work well alongside each other to support consumers whilst adopting the new behaviour. OPRL is currently reviewing how best to support dual-labelling solutions where space is constrained.

Why businesses should prepare now?

Although October 2027 may seem distant, packaging design cycles are long. Artwork updates, stock transitions and supply chain planning all require forward preparation.

Early planning will help you:

  • Avoid costly redesigns
  • Align DRS labelling with broader packaging reforms
  • Maintain consumer clarity
  • Ensure compliance from day one
