Show them what you’re made of: Navigating the challenges and opportunities of Extended Packaging Responsibility for Packaging Manufacturers

Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (pEPR) is coming – bringing with it a necessity for producers to understand the recyclability of everything that comes off the production line.

pEPR assigns producers the responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their packaging.  The principle is simple: the less recyclable the packaging, the more the producer will pay in fees.  However, the problem is that most producers simply don’t know the recyclability of their packaging. This is hugely relevant for manufacturers for whom there are challenges and opportunities as they look at how best to support their customers with the legislation – and we’ll analyse both here.

Challenges posed by pEPR

  1. The true cost of non-recyclable packaging: For packaging manufacturers, the design, materials, and overall recyclability of their products will soon directly impact their customers’ bottom lines. This means re-evaluating packaging designs, sourcing new materials, and fully understanding the recyclability of different substrates and materials. If this process isn’t done fast enough or with sufficient attention to detail, the true cost could be lost customers.
  2. Pressure to innovate: The shift towards recyclable packaging is not just a legal requirement; it is also driven by demand. Consumers and businesses alike are increasingly prioritising sustainable packaging, putting pressure on manufacturers to innovate rapidly. Developing new materials and technologies at speed is a significant challenge but those who don’t risk being left behind.

Opportunities arising from pEPR

  1. Help customers save time and money: pEPR presents a unique opportunity for packaging manufacturers to take a lead role in understanding the recyclability of their products and save their customers’ time and money.
  2. Knowledge is powerful: More and more brands and retailers are looking for pEPR-relevant credentials when selecting packaging manufacturers – we know because our members are telling us! By keeping up to date with the latest advice and guidance, you’ll be able to support your customers by informing them of the exact recyclability of all your packaging formats, safe in the knowledge that it’s backed up by the industry’s leading recycling experts. This positions knowledgeable packaging manufacturers as a vital source of support for brands and retailers looking to navigate pEPR.
  3. Build brand reputation: As sustainability becomes a key factor in purchasing decisions, manufacturers that are seen as environmentally responsible can enhance their brand reputation. pEPR compliance is not just about avoiding penalties; it’s about demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices and doing the right thing.

So how can your business navigate the complexities of pEPR and add value to your customers?

  1. Show them what your packaging is made of: This sounds simple but it’s no easy feat. It will be increasingly important to know if and how your packaging can be recycled.
