Liquid cartons move to a ‘Recycle’ label

We’re pleased to confirm a major development in the recyclability of beverage and food cartons in the UK. From 1 April 2026, liquid cartons used for food, drink, and other liquids — including aseptic and chilled formats — will be eligible to carry the OPRL Recycle label for kerbside collection.

This is a significant shift for brands, retailers, and packaging producers looking to ensure compliance with the upcoming Simpler Recycling legislation and meet growing consumer demand for clear and accurate recycling guidance.

Evidence-backed decision in partnership with ACE UK

OPRL’s decision is based on strong data and industry collaboration. Working closely with ACE UK, the industry body for carton recycling, we’ve reviewed the latest local authority collection data. The evidence shows that kerbside collections of cartons from UK households are on course to exceed the 75% threshold required for packaging to be designated as ‘Recycle’ under OPRL’s rules.

This reflects a positive and sustained shift in infrastructure and household participation, supporting a more circular approach to carton-based packaging.

Aligning with UK Simpler Recycling legislation

This change aligns with the Simpler Recycling reforms, which form part of the Collection and Packaging Reforms. Simpler Recycling is a new set of regulations that aims to standardise waste collections across all local authorities in England.

Currently, waste and recycling services vary widely by location. Under the new Simpler Recycling legislation (due to take effect by April 2026), all local authorities in England will be required to collect the same core materials from households, including liquid cartons. This consistency will make it easier for consumers to recycle correctly and for businesses to design packaging with greater confidence.

Important labelling guidance for members

While this announcement is good news for packaging designers and sustainability leads, it’s important to note the following:

  • The Recycle label for liquid cartons should only appear on packs placed on shelves from 1 April 2026.
  • Large cartons should use the ‘cap on’ call to action where appropriate.
  • Small cartons with straws can use the ‘insert straw’ instruction to support better recycling outcomes.
  • OPRL Members: Label artwork for cartons will be made available via the OPRL Recycling Labelling Tool in the lead-up to April 2026. In the meantime, members can request the artwork directly via our Member Support Team.

This phased approach ensures members have time to integrate the new labels into their packaging workflows while remaining compliant and aligned with the wider legislative timeline.

Supporting members to prepare early

To support our members in staying ahead, OPRL is enabling early access to the Recycle label for qualifying cartons. This means members can begin preparing their packaging designs and artwork now, with confidence that the labelling will align with the regulatory framework taking effect from April 2026.

By working collaboratively across the packaging and recycling supply chain, we’re helping to create clearer, more consistent labelling that benefits businesses, local authorities, and consumers alike.
