Celebrating B Corp Awareness Month: Our Journey to Making a Difference

It’s B Corp Awareness Month—a time to celebrate businesses that are redefining success by balancing purpose and profit. But what exactly does that mean? And why are we proud to be part of it?

What’s a B Corp, anyway?

B Corp certification isn’t just another badge on the wall. It’s a promise—a commitment to use business as a force for good. To earn this certification, companies must meet the highest global standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. They’re assessed on how they care for their workers, communities, customers, and the environment—all while maintaining strong governance.

Our Journey: Not Your Average Path to B Corp

In 2023, we proudly became a certified B Corp, joining a global movement of companies that believe in doing business differently. But our journey wasn’t the standard one. As a not-for-profit, we didn’t fit neatly into the usual B Corp framework. We had to fight to get our status, proving that our impact goes beyond just being a not-for-profit. It’s about the positive change we create every single day.

Our journey began in March 2020, but like many things during that time, it was put on pause due to COVID. Fast forward to March 2023, and we were back at it with renewed determination. After a rigorous review process, we gained our accreditation in August 2023, scoring an incredible 129 points—well above the 80 needed to qualify. This achievement reflects our commitment to doing good, being transparent, and constantly striving to improve.

What’s Next? Our Goals for this year

As a small not-for-profit, we might not have the resources for sweeping changes, but that doesn’t stop us from aiming high. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and we regularly seek feedback from our members, staff, and suppliers. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the changes we’re excited to roll out this year:

Life Skills Training: We’re expanding our training programs beyond job roles to include life skills, empowering our team both professionally and personally.
More Member Services: We’re looking to offer more than just recycling labels—watch this space for new initiatives to better serve our community.
Tech Improvements: We’re committed to addressing technology challenges to ensure our staff have the tools they need to thrive.

For us, being a B Corp is about more than a certification—it’s about being part of a global community of change-makers. It’s about proving that businesses can be a force for good while being transparent and accountable. It’s about raising the bar and inspiring others to do the same.
