Celebrate Recycle Week 2024 with OPRL: Rescue Your Packaging Heroes!

It’s Recycle Week 2024 and all of us at OPRL are excited to join Recycle Now to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our packaging out of the rubbish bin. This year marks the twenty-first annual Recycle Week, organized by Recycle Now, the UK’s largest celebration of recycling. Together, we aim to shine a light on the nation’s recycling habits and inspire action to protect five special packaging characters that deserve a second chance.
The Call to Action: Save the Packaging Heroes
Recycle Now’s latest research reveals a striking fact: while nine out of ten people in the UK regularly recycle, a staggering 79% admit to tossing items into the bin that could have been recycled. To tackle this issue, Recycle Now has introduced a vibrant team of packaging heroes, each representing a commonly discarded item that can easily be recycled. Meet Dee Dee the deodorant, Rey the plastic trigger spray, Yogi the yoghurt pot, Fitz the perfume bottle, and humble Hube—the toilet roll tube.
These characters will feature prominently across the UK, from recycling and refuse lorries to school education packs and social media campaigns. By bringing attention to their plight, we hope to encourage everyone to take a stand and “Rescue Me – Recycle.”
Empowering Consumers and Businesses to Recycle
At OPRL, our mission is clear: we envision a world where packaging doesn’t go to waste. By collaborating with the packaging supply chain, we help communicate straightforward recycling messages that empower consumers to recycle effectively. Research shows that most people look for recycling information on packaging when deciding how to dispose of it. However, confusing information leads to uncertainty, causing many to guess—often resulting in non-recyclable items contaminating the recycling stream or, worse, being thrown away altogether.
OPRL’s recycling labels are designed to cut through this confusion. Our clear and concise instructions ensure that consumers know exactly how to recycle their packaging, making our labels the most recognised and acted on in the UK.
Our work doesn’t stop at labels. OPRL provides a comprehensive suite of resources and support for our members, helping them to navigate recycling regulations and implement best practices. Jude Allan, Interim Managing Director at OPRL, emphasizes the importance of recycling: “Recycling means valuable materials can be captured and used again. The efforts of the OPRL team, our 900+ members, and the industry at large help consumers recycle better and more often. We’re proud to support Recycle Week and to raise awareness of this vital cause.”
